Creating Requirement Types for Curriculum Maps

Before you can create a Curriculum Map on your site, you'll need to name the various requirement types. For example, students may need to complete Core or Foundational Courses before moving on to Electives or Upper Division Courses. Independent Study, Directed Reading, and Honors may be part of an undergraduate program. Language Courses and Teaching might be required of graduate students. Various Milestones, such as qualifying exams or advancing to candidacy, may also be important to highlight.
To add these options to your site, you'll need to create Taxonomy terms for them. Taxonomy terms are categories that can be used to tag or group content. Follow the steps below to get started.

Determine What Requirement Types Are Needed

Important Note: Requirement Types are created on a site-wide basis. This means that ALL degree programs on your site (e.g. Undergrad, Coterm, PhD) will have the same list of options. Removing a requirement type impacts all Curriculum Maps that use it. Be sure to coordinate these tags among all site editors who utilize Curriculum Maps.
Before you start adding Requirement Types to your site, your unit should discuss which would be most beneficial across ALL of your degree programs. Undergrad, Coterm, and PhD programs typically have different needs, so your list should be all-inclusive.
We recommend creating a single list of Requirement Types and having one site editor add them to the taxonomy. While there is no limit on the number of Requirement Types you can create, the number of colors that can be assigned is currently limited to 10. Colors can be reused, but may require thoughtful planning as they signal grouping.

Navigate to "Taxonomy Terms"

There are two ways to access and manage Taxonomy Terms for Curriculum Maps:
Both options will take you to the same place, so use the method that makes the most sense for you.

Navigating to "Manage Taxonomy"

Starting at your Shortcuts menu, navigate to "Site Actions" and choose "Manage Taxonomy."
This will take you to the desired page where you can enter your Curriculum taxonomy types.

Within the Component on a Flexible Page

You can also navigate to the Curriculum Requirement Type Taxonomy page directly from your Curriculum Map component on your flexible page.
Because doing so will take you away from your Flexible Page, be sure to save any changes before setting your Taxonomy!
To do so, add the Curriculum Map component type to your page. Within the component, scroll to the Courses section of the first quarter of the first academic year. You'll notice a dropdown menu under "Requirement Type." If this dropdown is empty, you'll need to click the link directly below to "add/edit requirement types."
Clicking this link will bring you to the page where you can name your requirements.

Create Taxonomy Terms

Once you arrive on the Curriculum Requirement Type page, you'll be able to view, add, and edit existing Requirement Types. Start by clicking "Add Term."
On this page, you can set a name for a Requirement Type, as well as assign it a color for your eventual map. Play around with the color options to provide the best mix for your program.
Continue adding Requirement Types as needed, tailoring them to your unit's specific requirements or needs. Some suggestions include:
  • Core Course
  • Foundational Course
  • Elective
  • Independent Study
  • Honors/Capstone (either together as one requirement type, or as two separate types)
  • Language
  • Teaching
  • Milestone (for example, you might use this to note when a grad student will take a qualifying exam, advance to candidacy, go TGR, etc.)
This list is by no means comprehensive; add Requirement Types that make sense to your unit!
